Amount needed: € 10,936
Egoli Africa, founded in 2010, is committed to improving living conditions in the eastern region of Uganda, with a special focus on rural and disadvantaged communities, particularly girls and young women. Approximately 50 girls and young women currently participate in empowerment activities each year. With more machinery and tools, this number could increase significantly. The girls and young women learn skills, find work, or start their own businesses, enabling them to generate income. The Betuwe Worldwide Foundation needs €10,936 to supply machinery and tools for vocational training.
Project information
The situation
Kisozi is a sub-county with town-council status in Kamuli District, located in the eastern region of Uganda. The district lies along the eastern bank of the Victoria Nile River. Kamuli has a population of approximately 500,000. According to the Uganda Bureau of Statistics, Kisozi itself has an estimated population of approximately 15,000.
Kisozi has three primary schools, one secondary school, and one technical school. The local economy is primarily agricultural and based on small-scale subsistence farming. Major crops include maize, beans, bananas, and rice. Supplemental income is generated from livestock farming (cattle, goats, chickens) and fishing. The planned construction of the Isimba hydropower plant on the Victoria Nile River is expected to create new employment opportunities and contribute to poverty reduction in the region.
The importance of the project
The project aims to enable Egoli Africa to provide vocational training to rural and disadvantaged communities, with a particular focus on girls and young women. The training programs include carpentry, tailoring, hairdressing, shoemaking, beekeeping, agriculture, auto and motorcycle repair, welding, and metalworking. Access to affordable, practical vocational training is crucial for enabling young people to find work, start their own businesses, and build a sustainable income.
The implementing organisation
Egoli Africa was founded in 2010 as a Dutch foundation and has been officially registered in Uganda since 2016. The organization focuses on improving living conditions in the eastern region of Uganda, with a strong emphasis on rural and disadvantaged communities.
In 2017, Egoli Africa, with support from Betuwe Worldwide, established a training center in Kisozi. Approximately 50 young women now participate in training and empowerment activities there annually. The demand for training courses—including tailoring, carpentry, catering, automotive and motorcycle technology, and construction technology—significantly exceeds current capacity.
The envisaged project results
Currently, approximately 50 girls and young women participate in the program each year. Demand for skills such as tailoring, machine knitting, carpentry, catering, and motorcycle repair exceeds available resources.
With additional machinery and tools, significantly more girls and young women can learn a trade, find work, start their own businesses, and generate a stable income.
Chance of sustainability
The training centre has been in existence for almost ten years and has more than proven its worth. Well-trained professionals ensure higher productivity and better quality of services and products, increasing their chances of employment or self-employment. Egoli Africa places particular value on the economic empowerment of girls and young women. By providing them with access to vocational training, they increase their independence and their ability to support a family.
The organization largely covers its operating costs through the sale of products made during the training sessions and through tuition fees from participants, which contributes to the centre’s sustainability.
Project costs
€10,000 is needed for the supply of machines and tools for vocational training by the Betuwe Worldwide Foundation.
