Project information
The situation
Njombe is a city in southeastern Tanzania. It is the regional capital of the Njombe Region and the district headquarters of the Njombe Rural District and the Njombe Urban District. It is located at almost 2000 meters elevation on the edge of the Kipengere Range. Njombe region has a population of 700,000, Njombe Rural district 85,000 and Njombe urban district 130,000, with 16.1% of the population living below the poverty line for basic needs.
The agricultural sector dominates the local economy of the Njombe region, both subsistence and commercial farming. Most of the region’s income comes from the agricultural sector. Also, in the Njombe city the main economic activities are related to agriculture and horticulture.
The importance of the project
The aim of the project is to provide ELKYO Group with the means to provide adults with vocational training and help them to set up and run a small business such as tailor workshops, carpentry workshops, and welders workshops.
The implementing organisation
The ELKYO Group in Njombe was founded in 2018 and offers vocational training for men and women and teaches them how to set up and run a business. Since its foundation, 100 people have been trained: carpentry, tailoring, ICT. They have a number of skilled teachers and their income consists of the sale of products and the tuition of the trainees. They have close contacts with local companies, resulting in a merger of the learning process and job opportunities. The envisaged project results
The main result of this project is to ensure that adult men and women have improved their livelihoods.
Due to the important regional centre function of Njombe city, there are plenty of job opportunities. Through contacts with local companies, trainees also learn how to establish and run a small business.

ELKYO can pay its running costs with the income from the sale of products and the tuition fees of the students.
